Pre-State Divisionals Hub: What You Need To Know


Millennium junior Landen LeBlond in the elite 1600m at the Nike Chandler Rotary Invitational at Chandler High School on March 25. LeBlond enters the AIA Division State Track and Field Championships this week as the No. 1 athlete in all of Arizona for the 800m (2:10.39), 1600m (4:50.66) and 3200m (10:22.01).

The format for the state track and field meet has been changed this year.

Division championships are still happening, but the following week, the top 18 athletes in each event will compete at the State Championships. This model is similar to the Open Format in football, which features the best of the best regardless of division or classification.

Schedule Of Events

  • Thursday, May 4: Division I Day 1, 5 p.m. (Red Mountain High School)
  • Friday, May 5: Division IV, V Day 1 4 p.m. (Red Mountain High School)
  • Friday, May 5: Division II, III Day 1 3 p.m. (Deer Valley High School)
  • Saturday, May 6: Division II, III Day 2 4 p.m. (Deer Valley High School)
  • Saturday, May 6: Division I, IV, V Day 2 3:30 p.m. (Red Mountain High School)

What To Expect At Divisionals

- A maximum of 24 will qualify for running events.

- A maximum of 16 relay teams will qualify for divisionals.

- A maximum of 24 will qualify for long and triple jump.

- A maximum of 24 will qualify for discus and shot put.

- A maximum of 20 will qualify for javelin, high jump and pole vault.

If there is a tie for the last qualifying individual, then those tied will be admitted into the state meet.

Advancement to finals from Running Preliminaries

- Eight (8) to all finals

- Four heats: Heat winners and next four times.

- Three heats: Heat winners and next five times.

- Two heats: Heat winners and next six times.

State Qualifying

On Saturday, April 29, 2023, the rankings from all State Qualifying meets with all divisions will be merged. They will be posted Monday, May 1st.

- The top six (6) in each event automatically qualify for participation in the State Championship meet if entered by their respective coach by the deadline (May 8, 11:59 PM).

- Results from all Division Championships will be merged with the top six performances from State Qualifying Meets and posted May 8.

- The top 30 will be eligible for entry into the State Meet.

- The State performance list will be published Wednesday, May 10.

- Top 18 entries will advance to State.
